Mainely Rat Rescue (MRR) is an organization Incorporated as a non-profit in the State of Maine and founded in 2007 by four women who saw a need to save unwanted and often misunderstood, pet rats. Having worked and or volunteered for animal shelters and other rescues, they had been using their available resources individually and were re-homing abandoned pocket pets. They decided to rally together, combining resources and sharing contacts, and are now the proud founders of Mainely Rat Rescue.

Mainely Rat Rescue’s mission is to rehabilitate and find homes for surrendered or abandoned rats, as well as spreading awareness, education and support for this often misunderstood animal. While in foster care rats will be socialized with people and other rats, giving them the skills they need to make great companions. Proper food, housing and health care are provided to all rats until they find their forever home.

Future plans for MRR include becoming 501c3 in 2008 and one day expanding the rescue to include other small mammals, as well as having a shelter to house animals until they find their forever homes.

Mainely Rat Rescue is an all volunteer organization and does not receive funding from the state or any government agencies. MRR relies solely on donations and the revenue generated from our online store to support the animals in our care. All donations are greatly appreciated.

We need stories! Please tell us about your rescue/adopted ratties. Even if not from MRR, we still want to hear about them and so do our readers. We will use one story per week, bi-weekly or per month depending on how many entries we receive. If chosen, your story will be featured right here on our front page for all to read. Your rescue ratty could be a star! All stories must be non-fiction and those we choose to use will get a free gift from MRR. Please include your name, address and phone number when submitting your stories, that info will be kept private. We will also need a photo to accompany your story, after all, we want the whole world to see how rewarding adopting and rescuing can be!
